Until the Bitter End

With the last primaries coming up on Tuesday the race for the Democratic presidential nomination seems no nearer to a conclusion. Both candidates have been claiming victories in the the past primaries and the Clinton camp has put forth the notion that they will continue to to push for full delegations from Florida and Michigan despite the decision from the DNC. In th past few weeks it was believed that Hilliary Clinton would continue campaigning until the June primaries and then concede. She was looking for an exit strategy that would make it seem like she was leaving on her own terms. Furthermore, her rhetoric shifted toward attacking McCain. Yet, at the moment it doesn’t seem like she is any closer to conceding than a few months ago.

The benefits of staying in the race seem to be constantly shrinking. She’s not raising the same amount of money as Obama, and Obama has the majority of the delegates. More importantly, by staying in the race she could be damaging her political future. If she were to challenge the nomination process on the floor of the convention she would immediately become an outcast of the Democratic Party. Any future presidential ambitions would be out of the question and she would be excluded from the Obama presidency. And if things really went sour her hold on her New York Senate seat could be seriously weakened.

The Democratic Party is starting to solidify behind Obama which makes Clinton’s run for the nomination close to impossible, yet she’s being defiant to the end.  She has been making good use of her underdog status but it can only carry her so far. Come Tuesday night all eyes will be upon her to see if she finally throws in the towel.
